Ivano Sossella Penultimo Progetto (Avant-dernier projet)

Sossella

During his exhibition, in mai 2007, Ivano Sossella suprised everyone with his flower pots composition in balance on small shelves likely to fall at any moment. He presented us the interior walls to of a house, usually devoted to hanging paintings, emptied of any work of art. Only the trace of there absence was left, just like when we unhooked a painting after several years. That absence evoked a dimension of art that finds presence and reality in the extreme dissipation of its recognizable being.
Sossella also created a piece on the wall composed by random books, all opened on page 15.
But with this italien « quadra » is there really anything random?

At the end of the 80's, precisely in 1987, a new creativity was developped in the italien artistic milieu. Abandonning at the same time the absolutist politization and ideological systems, it was spread through individual methodologies, according to variable and unstable procedures.

Art can therefore extend to several languages which leads us to questionning the artist's job and effects it's opposit side, more ironic and more lyrical. Both milieus search, in a strained environment, relationships and connections between reality and fiction, between body and soul, individual and social.

For Ivano Sossella, as much as for Luca Vitone, Cesare Viel, Tommaso Tozzi and Filippo Falaguasta which in 1987 were linked in a movement named Arte (Dissipazione), it's the absence of narrative fabric, which is missing because their work is born from « the research beyond the object and art itself ». Sossella asserts :  « the Conceptual had a truth, not us! Art is a foolish and distributive act, a constant correction of a suggested direction and exhition. It is especially a suspected temptation ».

We talked, concerning the artist, about the « dissipation of the exhibited object ». The master-piece like agglomerates of actions and significance, appears in its maximum moment of disipation. In his first project (2005) at the Depardieur Gallery in Nice, Ivano Sossella took posession of the entire space which he filled with drawings with fixed topics hung on the wall. The obsessional presence of banknote images asserted the finality of art which was becoming more and more an object of financial investment and a source of a quick profit, it clarified also the unconscious impulse towards the possession, almost an erotic desire which would satisfy any individual.

What is he reserving us this time, with his third exhibition entituled « Penultimo Progetto », is there need to translate it?

« Possibilisme »

Sossella

Friday, May 10, 2007 will have place the second Italian artist Ivano Sossella’s individual exposition in Depardieu’s gallery, named “Possibilisme”, an artistic movement born in Genes, under the name of Arte ( Dissipazione)

The exposition includes the artist’s works and projects, realised from 1987 to nowadays. At the end of the Eighties, precisely in 1987, a completely new creativity develops her in the Italian artistic medium. Giving up at the same time the politicisation and the follow-up of absolutist ideological systems, she advances through individual methodologies which check time with others, according to variable and unstable procedures. Art can thus extend him towards several languages which put the artist job in crisis for reach his opposite side, most ironical, most lyric. For this artist, like for Luca Vitone and Cesare Viel, which in 1987 join them in a movement named Arte (Dissipazione) who will become Possibilitisme, it’s precisely narrative’s fabrics which miss : their work born just as “ a research beyond the pure art object ”. Sossella affirm: “the Conceptual had a truth, not us!”. “ Art is an foolish and distributive act, a constant correction suggested and ’s direction. That’s why the first work of Ivano Sossella visualizes the requirement to affirm our sensitivity to enlarge our point of view since the space where we are, toward places that “ technically heard direction ” allow us to reach. The artist search and propose a new statute in the object’s function interaction : the sound of a radio, modified by an electric drier functioning just at side is thus put in relation to the noise of the drier and he shares this moment. A semantic chain which could and can indeed continue. It’s thus work, having lost the places of art, make her an occasion for released from the commonplaces which control her and finds force and persuasion right in an absolute explosion of any explanation of direction. We consider the loss of “certainty data” which become functional and interior to the author work. We have spoken in connection with this artist about “Dissipation of the exposed object”: work being presented like an agglomerate of actions and significances appears indeed in her maximum moment of dispersion. “Work in distribution”, from 1987, develops later on the dissipative occasion of production : they are containers filled of a rank quantity of leaflet and folders. Phisical and significant dimension of the gallery are then exceeded through this dispatch, which can give to production a “practice activates”. The category of dissipation reveals an intention of work for the artist, who goes beyond the force and the shape of the object. In this manner, production makes her an occasion, like in the “Starks” of Felix Gonzales-Torres of 1989, for continue an experiment, while dispersing the certainty of content in favour of the use of an exploded and pluralized utilisation. In works “A Poster”, for example, Ivano Sossella carried out posters (of variable size according to the places of the exposure) on a hundred signs which fall and went up unceasingly.

Categories, or even only several manners of thinking art, since the installation until the performance, are not available in this dissipative process: it is a theoretical catch which seizes with force the artistic process.

" Jamais et Assez "

Sossella 2005

In the preceding project (2005) for Depardieu’s Gallery of Nice, Ivano Sossella had taken possession of entire space with drawings on fixed walls with topic. Today, if the obsessional presence of banknote images on every wall affirm the art’s finality to become more and more an financial investment and a fast source of profit, she clarifies also the unconscious impulse towards the possession, almost a desire erotic and satisfying any individuals. The underground world of imagination and the impulses of unconscious human become, in this exposure, an explicit and programmed representation. The office plurality of products represented by banknotes is not any more a simple representation of objects, but rather the instrument which will facilitate the representation of true experiments. The drawn monetary goods take the dimension of a scene material which lost his physical importance to become on the contrary typically symbolic. The author drawing one after the other always the same image manages to cumulate a richness of intentions and actions always supposed, but that we will be able to reach only (always) ironically. In is most recent expositive project (USW) Sossella shows us the walls, the interiors of a house, places of exposition, which indicate themselves visually by the artistic production absence. It’s their shades which will remain, the mark of their absence of the walls, as it arrives when we detaches a table of a wall after years that it was hung. Thus, the absence of artistic point finished by evoking a dimension of the art which finds his presence and right reality in the extreme dissipation of his reasonable person.

The artist, born in Gene in 1963, develop since 1987 a work in art by trying out the new languages linked to the “dissipative practice”. He has been presented in 1992 to Documenta IX in Kassel with a production made with Marco Formento. He carried out for this occasion a “supplemento”, a supplement with the catalogue, on an invitation of the Italian police chief. He was also presented in 1993 to Biennale de Venise. He records in addition in the 90’s, every time with Marco Formento, eight “siparietti”, little decorations for Italian TV, which will be diffused in the program television “Blob”. Ivano Sossella lives and works in Germany.
